Surprisingly, according to tradition, the wedding was not eaten, but rather thrown at the the bride as one of the early fertility traditions at a wedding.   Fortunately this tradition evolved into eating the cake.

 

Today's couples usually cut a slice of cake before anyone else and feed it to each other, symbolizing their union and the support they will give each other in years to come.
